Turkey's leaders say Kurdish control of the oil fields around Mosul and Kirkuk, which produce almost 1 million barrels of the average 2.5 million barrels that Iraq produces a day, would make an independent Kurdish state viable and inspire Kurdish separatists in Turkey's impoverished south-east.

``We don't want any claim on the oil,'' said retired Turkish Major General Armagan Kuloglu, head of geopolitical and strategic studies at the Ankara-based Center for Eurasian Strategic Studies. ``We just want to protect it from Kurdish groups. If they control the oil, they will have economic power.''
