The Arab TV network Al-Jazeera said Monday two of its reporters covering the New York Stock Exchange have had their credentials revoked because of the satellite station's coverage of the war in Iraq.

Exchange spokesman Ray Pellechia denied the station's war coverage was the cause. Citing "security reasons," he said the exchange had chosen to limit the number of broadcasters working at the lower Manhattan exchange since the war began, giving access only to networks that focus "on responsible business coverage."

Al-Jazeera said it got a letter from the exchange saying the number of accredited TV stations needed to be reduced. It said reporters Ammar al-Sankari and Ramzi Shiber had their credentials withdrawn.

The network said the reason was "Al-Jazeera's coverage of the war on Iraq."

It said it has covered the exchange for years and believes it is the only channel affected by the new curbs. Pellechia said other broadcasters had been refused accreditation or permission to increase their staff, but he declined to give examples.

Al-Jazeera, which angered Washington by showing footage of dead and captured American soldiers, voiced concern after two of its reporters were banned from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and its Web sites were hacked.

The NYSE stopped al-Jazeera broadcasts, saying credentials were only for networks that provided "responsible" coverage. Al-Jazeera was also denied a request to broadcast live from New York's Nasdaq exchange.

Norman J Pattiz, the US entertainment mogul behind the famed Larry King and Casey Kasem shows, is preparing to launch a American-operated Arabic-language television network to quell anti-US sentiment in the Middle East.

The US government believes the Middle East Television Network will help "win the hearts and minds" of the Iraqi people in the aftermath of the war, the Wall Street Journal reported today.

Mr Pattiz, founder of the Westwood One radio network, spearheaded a push by the US media into the region a year ago, establishing the Arabic-language Radio Sawa network a month after the September 11 terrorist strikes.

The US government has so far poured $57m (£36m) into the venture, and this week President George Bush appealed for an additional $30.5m (£19m) to ensure the TV and radio network can be established as a viable competitor to al-Jazeera, the controversial Arab satellite broadcaster.

Al-Jazeera: 'A reputation for credible news among Arab viewers'

Al-Jazeera, the Arab TV satellite channel whose war coverage has angered the US, has been awarded a prestigious prize for upholding freedom of expression.
The Qatar-based channel won the award for the best circumvention of censorship at Index on Censorship's third annual Freedom of Expression Awards last night.

The judges, including the former Channel 4 news presenter Sheena McDonald and the Daily Mail's veteran foreign reporter Ann Leslie, said: "Al-Jazeera's apparent independence in a region where much of the media is state run has transformed it into the most popular station in the Middle East."

"Its willingness to give opposition groups a high-profile platform has left it with a reputation for credible news among Arab viewers. But that same quality has enraged Arab governments and the US - which have sought to have the station more closely controlled."
