LONDON, March 15 — On three continents, Al Qaeda and other terror organizations have intensified their efforts to recruit young Muslim men, tapping into rising anger about the American campaign for war in Iraq, according to intelligence and law enforcement officials.
In recent weeks, officials in the United States, Europe and Africa say they had seen evidence that militants within Muslim communities are seeking to identify and groom a new generation of terrorist operatives. An invasion of Iraq, the officials worry, is almost certain to produce a groundswell of recruitment for groups committed to attacks in the United States, Europe and Israel.

"An American invasion of Iraq is already being used as a recruitment tool by Al Qaeda and other groups," a senior American counterintelligence official said. "And it is a very effective tool."

Another American official, based in Europe, said Iraq had become "a battle cry, in a way," for Qaeda recruiters.

AMMAN, Jordan -- At Books@Cafi, a trendy hangout for hip young Jordanians with money to burn on a bewildering array of flavored lattes, Saddam Hussein has unexpectedly become the flavor of the week.

The stiff resistance shown by Iraqi forces to invading U.S. troops has surprised many Arabs who opposed war but assumed it would be over quickly. Now that Iraq has slowed the U.S. advance toward Baghdad, the anger that washed over the region when the war started is being channeled into admiration for the once-discredited dictator.

"Every day that this war goes on, every day that he resists America, Saddam's popularity goes up," said Malik Mall, 23, who holds U.S. and Jordanian citizenship. "If he survives this war and defeats the most powerful nation on Earth, he will be the biggest hero ever for all the people of the world."

Он заявил, что следует атаковать проамериканские правительства Пакистана, Афганистана, Бахрейна, Кувейта и Саудовской Аравии. "Все эти правительства были вам навязаны, и джихад против них является вашей прямой обязанностью", - заявил бин Ладен.

При этом он говорил только о мучениках-самоубийцах - другие виды атак террорист номер один не упоминал.

"Соединенные Штаты атаковали Ирак, но скоро они атакуют Иран, Саудовскую Аравию, Египет и Судан. В Египте и Саудовской Аравии это будут атаки против исламских движений в этих странах", - сказал бин Ладен.

Hundreds of Muslim fighters, many of them non-Iraqis, were putting up a stronger fight for Baghdad than Iraq's Republican Guard or the regular army, a top United States military officer said yesterday.
"They stand, they fight, sometimes they run when we engage them," Brigadier-General John Kelly said.

"But often they run into our machine guns and we shoot them down like the morons they are."

General Kelly, assistant commander of the about 20,000-strong 1st Marine Division, said US intelligence indicated that there might be anywhere between 500 and 5000 of the fighters, whom he described as terrorists.

"They appear willing to die. We are trying our best to help them out in that endeavour," he said.

General Kelly said a captured Syrian fighter who had his leg blown off had refused medical help. "They are arrogant. They are determined," he said.

The fighters were armed with AK47 rifles and hand-held rockets, he said.

"We are finding them more dangerous than the conventional Iraqi units."

CAIRO, April 11 (Reuters) - For Egypt's Americanised golden youth, these are schizophrenic times.

Egyptians with close professional or cultural ties to the United States say the U.S.-led war on Iraq has tarnished their image of the country they most admired.

"Before the war, I was undecided about America's commitment to its promises," said Mai Ezz el-Din, 29, who works for a U.S. insurance firm in Cairo.

"Now I have seen them breaking their word and changing their stance. I don't believe what they say anymore."

Like many of Egypt's young business elite, Ezz el-Din studied at the American University in Cairo (AUC), founded by Christian missionaries in the late 19th century.

Now some children of the age of globalisation say they are starting to look to Europe, notably to anti-war France, for an education and a role model.

Terrorists planning attacks on US citizens in Saudi Arabia

Terrorist groups may be in the "final phases" of planning attacks against the American community in Saudi Arabia, the US embassy warned yesterday.

"The embassy advises the American community in Saudi Arabia that it has received information that terrorist groups may be in the final phases of planning terrorist attacks on American interests in Saudi Arabia," it said in a statement.

There are about 30,000 to 40,000 Americans living and working in Saudi Arabia, down from more than 60,000 a decade ago.

"We have no information as to the likely target," it said, adding that US citizens in the kingdom should "take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness". ---

DUBAI (AFP) - Al-Qaeda is preparing a new attack in the United States on the scale of September 11 after adopting a new operational structure which is impenetrable to US intelligence, according to a Saudi weekly.

"An attack against America is inevitable," Al-Majallah quotes the Islamic militant network's newly-appointed spokesman Thabet bin Qais as saying in an e-mail to the paper.

Al-Qaeda has "carried out changes in its leadership and sidelined the September 11, 2001 team", the paper quotes bin Qais as saying.

"Future missions have been entrusted to the new team, which is well protected against the US intelligence services. The old leadership does not know the names of any of its members."
