US rejects Iraq DU clean-up

The US says it has no plans to remove the debris left over from depleted uranium (DU) weapons it is using in Iraq.
DU shells can go straight through the side of a tank
It says no clean-up is needed, because research shows DU has no long-term effects. It says a 1990 study suggesting health risks to local people and veterans is out of date.

A United Nations study found DU contaminating air and water seven years after it was used. (snip)

A Pentagon spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel David Lapan, told BBC News Online: "Since then there've been a number of studies - by the UK's Royal Society and the World Health Organisation, for example - into the health risks of DU, or the lack of them.

"It's fair to say the 1990 study has been overtaken by them. One thing we've found in these various studies is that there are no long-term effects from DU.
"And given that, I don't believe we have any plans for a DU clean-up in Iraq." (snip/...)

LONDON, April 15 (Reuters) - Human rights group Amnesty International accused U.S.-led forces on Tuesday of being better prepared for the defence of Iraq's oil wells than of its people and infrastructure.
"There seems to have been more preparation to protect the oil wells than to protect hospitals, water systems or civilians," Irene Khan, secretary-general of the British-based group, told a news conference in London.

"And the first taste of the coalition's approach to law and order will not have inspired confidence in the Iraqi people."

Washington and London deny suggestions that the invasion of Iraq was linked to its large oil reserves, and have vowed to make sure any oil profits are collected by Iraqis.

But since the fall of Saddam Hussein last week, water shortages and looting in parts of Iraq have proved awkward counterpoints to the widely televised popular celebrations.

All oil fields in
Iraq now fall within areas controlled by the U.S.
coalition, a U.S. general announced Monday.

Allied forces had previously secured all 1,000 oil
wells in southern Iraq. Kurdish allies last week
seized the northern oil city of Kirkuk, Iraq's No. 2
oil center, which pumps as much as 900,000
barrels a day.

U.S. Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks made the
announcement at a U.S. Central Command briefing
in Doha, Qatar.

``There is one well we discovered in the north in
recent days that is still burning, and that will be
addressed as soon as we can do so,'' he added.

Tehran, April 14, IRNA -- US Marines on Sunday arrested a reporter of Iran's Arabic television channel Al-Aalam in the Iraqi city of Kut and took him to an undisclosed place, the channel's cameraman said.
Abdol Hadi Zeighami was arrested while reporting on US tanks rolling into the eastern town, around 170 km southeast of Baghdad. US Marines also took away the film which the Al-Aalam crew had shot from the war scene.
"American Marines seized the camera and after taking out its film gave the camera back," the cameraman said, adding they also took away some of the "technical equipment" of the Al-Aalam crew.
Witnesses said a group of citizens in Kut gathered in front of the city's governor office to protest the arrest of the reporter.

AS SAYLIYA CAMP, Qatar, April 15 (Reuters) - U.S. military chiefs who have been conducting the war in Iraq from their headquarters in Qatar have changed their focus to turning on the lights, bandaging wounds and promoting democracy.

Brigadier General Vincent Brooks for weeks presented combat camera video footage at his daily briefings, showing special forces raids and thunderous explosions as the U.S.-led forces pressed ever deeper into Iraq to oust Saddam Hussein.

But on Tuesday Brooks showed a batch of "feel good" pictures of Iraqis smiling and shaking hands with Americans delivering food, water and medical supplies.

"The focus of the coalition's operations in the last 24 hours has been on eliminating the remaining pockets of resistance, locating key regime leaders and increasing military contributions to humanitarian assistance," Brooks said.

А в чем дело? CBI пользуется популярностью на форуме, я например, его читаю. Не ленится человек, дает интересные линки. А вас когда-то перестал читать после того, как вы предложили на виртуальных диструкторах память экономить. Так что кто еще сам с собой беседы ведет...

Ну начали про сокеты, шляпы, это я виноват, поддел человека. Несите канделябр

, это была облегченная разновидность приема, который делает видимость полного ничтожества оппонента не совсем честными средствами. (p.s. Я лично согласен и на windows сокеты в unix, но в туда еще пока не перенесен вижуал бэйсик, а память и производительность каждый по своему экономит/увеличивает - демократия! :umnik1:
