Teaching certification is vastly easier to get (and cheaper!) than a MD. My mom got it at the age of 50 while working full time. And it's easier to get a teaching job for someone who has a science degree. The pay isn't too good (who'd want to work for 40k when you can get a 60k entry-level job in any biotech / pharma company?), so it's hard to find decent teachers.
I know people, graduates of science programs, who work at 40K. There isn't much you can do with a pure science degree.
And I know a guy with a pure bachelor's degree in physics (not myself) who makes 120K. He's in his early 30's. But he also has work experience, of course.
