United Nations: The United States, which went to war in Iraq without the United Nations' backing, now finds itself in the awkward position of having to ask for UN help in stabilizing the country.
Nearly four months after launching the war that toppled Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, Washington is having serious difficulty finding sufficient troops to help the more than 140,000 US soldiers deployed in Iraq.
And the Pentagon's acknowledgement that US forces in Iraq are confronting guerrilla warfare is not simplifying matters.
The United States has also had to confront staggering costs from the war, amounting to some 3.9 billion dollars per month - double the spending projected by the White House prior to the war.
"Initially, they thought Iraq would be a big cake and each party invading it would have a piece," a diplomat said. "Now they realize it's not something to enjoy but something you have to pay for."
