Pre-Existing Condition -
Here is an explanation of the preeexistion condition: A "preexisting condition" is defined as a medical or mental health problem was present and had care rendered up to six months before the time of enrollment into a health plan. For example, a patient has had scoliosis diagnosed for thirty years, but has not sought treatment in the six months prior to enrolling in a group health plan. Coverage for treatment of the scoliosis cannot be excluded by the plan.
So, if your mom did not get treatment for her problem during six month before the time of enrollment, he condition can not be considered preexisting. I would schedule an appointment with a doctor.
As to the difference between family practitoners and internists: Family practitioners are the primary care providers for all ages of patients and tend to be the doctor for entire families. Internists tend to be the primary care doctor for adults. Usually they will see patients over the age of 13. For a serious, chronic medical condition, I would suggest the internist. The family practitioner/GP may have a better orientation toward preventive medicine. Ultimately the best primary
care doctor to go with depends not on specialty, but on how comfortable the
doctor makes you feel.
