International reaction to the Beslan tragedy

Post by finehall »

Here are the first international reactions (from BBC):

Read it and compare Danish, Dutch and Irish reaction with some others.

US President George W. Bush
************************************

"This is yet another grim reminder of the length to which terrorists will go to threaten this civilized world.

"We mourn the innocent lives that have been lost, we stand with the people of Russia, we send them our prayers for this terrible situation."

Queen Elizabeth II
***********************

The Queen sent a message of condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

She spoke of her "profound shock at the events" and asked Mr Putin to pass on her "deepest sympathy to the bereaved and injured".

British Prime Minister Tony Blair
**************************************

"I have been closely watching the terrible developments in North Ossetia.

"It is hard to express my revulsion at the inhumanity of terrorists prepared to put children and their families through such suffering.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with you, the families and friends of those killed, those injured and all of the Russian people at this time."

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder
***********************************************

"Here terrorists without conscience tried to reach political goals by murdering people.

"Everyone in Germany is moved with sympathy for the victims and their families, as of course am I."

Dutch Foreign Minister Bernard Bot
********************************************

"This is a terrible tragedy - hard to judge from distance.

"It is very difficult to judge from a distance whether the right decision was taken or not. But the authorities have done their utmost to find a solution through negotiations.

"We are here being confronted with a deep human tragedy. I have also learned with very great sorrow that many of the hostages have been killed, there are many wounded.

"This shows once again that we have to do everything in our power to combat terrorism. We have to unconditionally condemn terrorism in whatever form it presents itself. Let it also be a stimulus for us to work more closely together in this field to avoid similar tragedies."

European Commission President Romano Prodi
*********************************************************

"Killing of these innocent people is an evil, despicable act of barbarism. The fact that many of them appear to have been young children murdered in cold blood is simply horrible."

German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer
**************************************************

"We condemn this crime in the sharpest terms. I cannot see any reason which legitimates that babies, children, were taken hostage or killed. It is an awful crime and must be condemned.

"I hope the hostages return unharmed."

Chief Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls
**********************************************************

"There is sadness for the huge loss of life and for the immense pain of the parents and families of victims resulting from an act of terrorism."

Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller
***********************************************

"It is totally inhumane to take children as hostages. I think there is no excuse for that and it harms any kind of sympathy for the Chechen cause."

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi
***********************************************

"We're all holding our breath: lots of children are now in hospital and we'll see what happens. But clearly the fathers and mothers of the world have breathed a sigh of relief. These are astonishing times, the level of insecurity is very high."

Irish Foreign Minister Brian Cowen
****************************************

"It is regrettable that it did not prove possible to bring this crisis to a peaceful end."

He added that his reaction was one of "horror and sadness".

Polish Defence Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski
****************************************************

"Terrorism has shown one of its ugliest faces - attacking children."

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis
*****************************************************

"We have to be very careful ... if we repeat the same story as in Moscow it would be awful." [Reference to the operation to end the Moscow theatre siege in October 2002]
