The majority of Russians has a negative opinion of U.S. President George Bush — despite President Vladimir Putin’s recent comments that just fell short of endorsing the incumbent in the presidential race.
According to a poll by the Russian Public Opinion Foundation, 53 percent of Russians don’t like Bush, while only 15 percent have a positive image of the U.S. president, the Interfax news agency reported.
Meanwhile, only 40 percent of the respondents can name the candidates in the presidential race. Among them, 12 percent feel that Russia would benefit if Senator John Kerry won the race, while eight percent believe that Bush’s victory would be in Russia’s best interests.
President Putin, speaking in Tajikistan Monday, said that “The attacks of international terrorism in Iraq are directed not only at international coalition forces but at President Bush personally,” comments widely accepted as a move of support of George Bush ahead of the elections on Nov. 2.
