There are more than 2,000 acupuncture points on the body connecting with 12 main and eight secondary pathways called meridians, which conduct energy - qi (чи) - between the surface of the body and the internal organs.Qi regulates spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance. Qi is influenced by the opposing forces of yin and yang. According to traditional Chinese medicine, when yin and yang are balanced, they work together with the natural flow of qi to help the body achieve and maintain health. Acupuncture is believed to balance yin and yang, keep the normal flow of energy unblocked, and restore health to the body and mind.
A western interpretation would be that the acupuncture points stimulate the central nervous system, releasing chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain, promoting the body's natural healing abilities. In the words of the National Institutes of Health: "Studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones in a good way."
It takes about 4-5 visits to an acupuncturist to see a sagnificate improvement.
You may use this website
http://www.medicalacupuncture.org/findadoc/index.html to locate an acupuncturist in your area. Please remember that you need to find an acupuncturist who has a Master degree in Chinese medicine. Do not just go for an acupuncture practitioner. Your acupuncturist should have a license from a state where he is practicing. In California many acupuncturist offices accept health insurance. Your insurance may cover your acupuncture visits 100%. With HMO insurance you will need a referal from you primary physician but check with the acupuncturist office first. Otherwise, an acupuncture session $30-$100.
I your insurance won't cover acupuncture visits I sugesst you to find a local Chinese medicine school. Some schools have cliniques for the students to practice. The cost of each session is $10-$20. I can recommend such clinices in Chicago, New York and San Diego.
And by the way, acupuncture is not painful. Иногда практически не чувствуется, иногда лёгкое покалывание. Думаю, это зависит от специалиста и от конкретных точек, на которые ставят иголки. Overall, it is a very pleasant and relaxing experience . Я проходила лечение в течение 4х недель, по 30 минут каждный еженедельный сеанс.
Oh, by the way. Your acupuncturist may combine acupucnture treatments with some herbs. They run about $10-15 a bottle. You will need to take them as prescribed. Also, if you are not a big fan of nidles I suggest you to go to an acupucnturisnt and see if he can replace acupuncture with herbs treatment. However, as I said before, acupuncture is not painful.
Also, if you are taking antidepressants please consult your acupuncturist before stopping. As far as I know you are not supposed to stop taking them suddenly. It is a slow process of going from a current dose to a lower does.
I know some Chinese medicine practitioners in California and South Florida if you need a referral.
