A. I don't work there any more.
B. I almost never worked 80 hours per week. More like 55 on average.

What's the alternative? Do you know any other profession that doesn't require crazy hours and pays a lot of money?

Dead serious. I can't say that they are happy people in the common definition of this word, but they get perverse pleasure from putting in crazy hours, and then boasting about it to young associates.

Мне понравилось как в другом топике MiniMi назвала таких людей "insecure overachievers". и даже не жадность к деньгам ими движет.
Simply put, they define themselves through work. Without their job they feel worthless.

We all define ourself through something. I don't see anything wrong with defining yourself through achievements at work.

Except that when you are done with that work noone remembers what you did and there's nothing left to show for the years you spent doing it. Most of the time. Anyway, that's a whole different issue and definitely off-topic.

Well, let's see. I can totally understand when people are genuinely in love with what they do, and they spend a lot of time doing something they really enjoy - teaching, doing research, developing their own business, whatever, etc. I do respect that.
But, when I see people who genuinely hate their job, but still are doing it, in part maybe because they are so afraid of switching and doing something else; and it pleases them to tell other people how many hours per day they work <as if this is a real indicator of productivity>, I think that they are simply workaholics, and this is not the path to happiness.

...and what do you think lawyers at prestigious firms do in their first two years?

the first two years are frequently spent trying to figure out why the hell they are paying you six figures do glorified clerical work 60 hours a week and how to continue faking being a grow-up lawyer:lol: you sucessfully forget what little you new about practicing law and what the inside of a courtroom looks like

is that an IL thing? instead of the MBE, you have to perform on stage American Idol style in front of the proctors?

seriously through, there is absolutely no reason to postpone the bar no matter how thick your accent is. MBE is multiple choice and I'm sure the State portion does not require perfect diction or even perfect spelling/grammar. Just take BarBri, study a few hours a day for 2 months and really really hard for 2 weeks before the bar and you'll be fine.

as someone who never quite got rid of her accent (after 16years in the states and 6 years as a lawyer)  , i can assure you the best way to get over the fear of public speaking is to face it heads on (i remember being so embarassed about having an accent that i almost did not sign up for 2nd year moot court competition) when i did finally sign up literary 2 days before, it was as a favor to a friend whose team partner dropped out. well, despite being virtually unprepared and talking WAY too fast (another bad habit I have), I somehow managed to advance to the school finals and, as a result, was one of the 3 people selected to represent the school at 3rd year ABA appelate regionals. of course, i continued to obsess about being the only person there with an accent while i should have been preparing but, surprisingly, ended up winning the regionals and getting a free trip to the nationals. (plus, the whole thing did not hurt my resume either).

i still sometimes get nervous about public speaking and worry about my accent but never had a judge or a jury hold it against me. so my advice is, by all means, work on your accent, but don't postpone taking the Bar or starting your career because of it.

еше одна категория-- in-house counsel for a corporation. starting salary for newly minted law school grads is typically $100-130K plus $10K + sign on bonus.

oh, and there is always solo practice --it can make you very rich or very poor but you can realistically expect to clear about $50-100K your first year working 30-40 hours a week

I have no fear of public speaking at all. Actually, I enjoy it. I dont worry about BAR, too. It is just an exam that requires a lot of work. I worry about my future job, that's why my BAR is set on July '07.

My options are very defined for the following 5 years.
1. My current firm.
2. Cassiday Schade & Gloor.
3. Hinshaw & Culbertson.
4. .........

In order for me to get where I want, I need to become a star there (option 2 and 3) within first 6 month. Thus, I need more time to prepare for that sprint. I have to publish 2 more articles and improve my writing drastically. That's my nature, I like to plan things ahead and I also like to be #1 in everything I do. Additionally, I enjoy litigation alot. It is the best area I've ever worked.

Also, I hate people who complain instead of changing something.

If you graduate in 06 and take the bar in 07, people will assume that you failed the bar the first time you took it. And it usually gets harder to pass it if you have a job.

What are you going to do for a year if you don't take the bar? Will your current firm even let you work there? Even if you do, you won't be able to go anywhere else if something happens.

How can you be a star if you are not even an attorney?

Fighting over the Motion for Summary Judgment. For now, that’s the most exciting part, at least for me.

By now, I wrote 32 replies to MSJ in total. Never lost so far ))))

NatalyaTX,

I was pleasure reading your notes. That's the biggest dream of my life --BE IN FRONT OF JURY. Better than sex  or, at least, as good as sex.
