Selling Your Home Without An Agent
NATURALLY, real estate brokers vigorously fight the notion that you can sell your house yourself. They argue that only they know true local home values and real estate laws and that they will "screen" potential buyers for you -- protecting both your time and your safety. "In today's more competitive market, sellers need every marketing edge," says Dorcas Helfant, past president of the National Association of Realtors. "Broker fees are high, but agents work hard for them."
Some owners think otherwise. According to a 1995 National Association of Realtors study, about 15% of all home sellers go solo. (Other surveys put the number as high as 40% in some regions.) Thinking about taking the plunge yourself? Here's what you need to know if you are going to act as your own broker.
