Post by cat in a hat »

Is it better to do it through PSEG or an independent contractor?

I don't know NJ specifics, but generally speaking any licensed plumbing contractor should be able to do it. Just make sure it's done according to the code.

I meant which is more economical. As far as I know PSEG sends contractors to do the job, but their quote was less than a different contractor I contacted on my own, therefore I am not sure which way is best to take. Either PSEG doesn't give me the whole story and just gives me basic price and there are hidden charges, or it is more economical. I was hoping someone was dealing with this too..

I replaced my heater in september. I didn't really shop around since I had to do it urgently. My old one was not up to the SF code and I had the inspector coming in the morning to do the final sign-off on my kitchen remodel. I didn't want him to delay the sign-off because of the water heater. I paid my contractor $550 for both the new water heater and the work to replace it. Took about 2.5 hrs.

I got a quote of around 1000 for a replacement water heater (installation is included). They are installing A.O. Smith. I am not sure if these are good quality water heaters. Can anyone give me any advice on the subject?

normal life of the water heater is from 10 to 15 years, so it's going on 13th..you may start looking into replacement. Mine is not producing enough hot water, makes strange noises, and is over 12 years old

Thanks.

My heater uses natural gas. I hear slightly "shee" when it burns gas, but not "bulc-bulc". Hope it will live up to 15 years.

Какого размера heater? A.O.Smith много проблем с gas valve. REEM much better.Smoke pipe must be 4"(code req).If you have PRV valve in house you need expansion tank for Water Heater. 75 gallons or bigger must have expansion tank period! Need Jumper for hoot and cold water. Drip pipe on gas line. You also need a permit. Any Questions?
