His mother was addicted to crack; his father to heroin. After his parents were arrested for shoplifting, Fry was sent to live with a series of relatives.
When Fry was brought to live with his grandmother in Newport Beach at age 3, he did not speak, was not potty trained and tested out at an IQ of 70. Social Service workers said he was severely mentally disabled. Autism was later diagnosed as well.
By the time he was 18, Fry had spent years on psychotropic drugs. He finished high school in a lock-down facility for troubled youth, where he also received treatment for an attraction to child pornography.
By all accounts, he was an unlikely choice to become one of the few, the proud, the Marines.
Each branch of the service has rules requiring that recruits be able to meet medical and physical requirements plus standards for education, mental aptitude, and moral character. But with the U.S. relying on an all-volunteer service to fight bloody wars on two fronts, pressure on recruiters to bend or break the rules has intensified.
Nine days before he was approved for federal long-term disability, a Marine recruiter picked Fry up from a group home and helped him enlist. Court papers allege the recruiter told him to lie about his mental problems. The recruiter has declined to speak with the reporters.
It did not take long for Fry's life to be turned upside down by the regimen of the Marine Corps. After two weeks of basic training, Fry told Corps officials that he had autism. They either didn't believe him or didn't care. He urinated in his canteen, returned to his old addiction of pornography, and finally, went AWOL.
И вообще интересно, откуда будут брать рекрутеры будущих солдатов в стране всеобщего ожирения? Да у этого обжоры ноги откажут в самом начале броска через Афганский хребет, а уж попасть в такую толстую мишень не сможет разве что незрячий.
