It is the highest-profile felony conviction in a sweeping four-year federal investigation into corruption in Alaska politics, and an almost unprecedented conviction by a jury of a sitting U.S. senator.

Stevens faces up to five years in prison on each count when he is sentenced Jan. 26

The guilty verdict will complicate not only his re-election bid, but also the remainder of his term in the Senate. His colleagues have the option -- never actually exercised -- of voting to expel him before his term ends in January.

The Justice Department has charged 11 people in connection with their corruption probe in Alaska, including five former and current state legislators in Alaska. Other than Stevens, five pleaded guilty, three were convicted by juries in Alaska, and two await trial.

Да, "виновен" по семи обвинениям, "до пяти" по каждому. Даже подаренную собаку сосчитали. Действительно, сурово. Надеюсь, что сажать его все-таки не станут, дадут умереть на воле. Все-таки 84 года мужику. Воспитательный эффект уже достигнут - напустили законодателям холоду в трусы на несколько лет.

He had asked for an unusually speedy trial, hoping he'd be exonerated in time to win re-election. Despite being a convicted felon, he is not required to drop out of the race or resign from the Senate. If he wins re-election, he can continue to hold his seat because there is no rule barring felons from serving in Congress. The Senate could vote to expel him on a two-thirds vote.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A new ethics complaint has been filed against Sarah Palin, accusing the Alaska governor of abusing her power by charging the state when her children traveled with her.

The complaint alleges that the Republican vice presidential nominee used her official position as governor for personal gain, violating a statute of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act. It follows a report by The Associated Press last week that Palin charged the state more than $21,000 for her three daughters' commercial flights, including events where they weren't invited, and later ordered their expense forms amended to specify official state business.

In some cases, Palin also has charged the state for hotel rooms for the girls.

The complaint released Wednesday says Palin charged the travel costs for events her children were not invited to and where they served in no legitimate state purpose or business. Administration officials have said Alaska law allows governors to charge the state for their family's travel if they conduct state business.

"Governor Palin intentionally secured unwarranted benefits for family members, improperly used state property to benefit her personal and financial interests, and illegally altered documents that were the subject of a Public Records request," the complaint states.

Begich today said the move was "reasonable"."I didn't think Senator Stevens should serve time in jail and hopefully this decision ensures that is the case," he said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.

очень странно что в законе нет ограничения по сроку занимать пост сенатора. это как бы азы information security - job rotation уменьшает возможность делать что-то незаконное, т.к. отрывает человека от разработанных и внедренных схем. 40 лет, это же офигеть просто
