Republicans have proposed reductions of more than $3.3 billion in current research spending by various federal agencies. The list is long and the cuts are deep, including an $893 million reduction below current spending at the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Office of Science, to $4.1 billion, and a cutback of $1.6 billion at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to $29.5 billion, bringing both agencies to 2008 spending levels. The National Science Foundation (NSF), one of the favored children of the Obama Administration, would see its current budget pared by $388 million to a level—$6.57 billion—that would be more than $1 billion below the president's request of $7.77 billion in 2012.
