7 July 2014 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today strongly condemned the “continued, unlawful” acts of armed fighters in Ukraine after reports that they are regrouping in eastern provinces, and urged Ukrainian authorities to exercise maximum restraint and protect civilians.
According to media reports, armed groups have regrouped in Donetsk and Lugansk, from which more and more residents have fled and others are trapped in zones of heavy fighting.
On 30 June, an extended ceasefire that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko had put in place ended, resulting in Ukrainian forces to engage in what Mr. Ban termed “intensified military activity.”
Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said the UN chief also underscored the importance of a “renewed and lasting cease-fire upheld by all parties” and a political solution to the ongoing crisis.
“The continuation of a political and diplomatic process towards a definitive cessation of violence and a peaceful resolution of the crisis is critical,” he said.
Navi Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, last week warned against “utterly reprehensible” incitement to violence targeting women and underage girls, and destruction of civilian infrastructure.
She said that in the past week, her team had received numerous alarming reports of deaths in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, including the killing of a five-year-old girl, due to the intensified security operations.
Ms. Pillay said she was particularly disturbed by a message on the website of one leader of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic,” stating that underage children and women are legitimate targets and that the goal is to ‘immerse them in horror.’

“For every life of one of our soldiers, the militants will pay with dozens and hundreds of theirs,” Poroshenko said in Kiev two days ago. “Every single one will be held accountable and get their due.”

Residents of the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk and the town of Maryinka clean up the damage on Saturday after the Ukrainian military shelled parts of the region. The military says the shelling was in retaliation for a rebel missile strike that killed 30 Ukrainian soldiers on Friday
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/j ... wn-donetsk
Who is responsible for the firing remains unclear: both sides have weapons within range of the positions that have come under fire. The Guardian witnessed a convoy of 100-plus Ukrainian military vehicles including multi-rocket launchers, tanks and armoured personnel carriers disappear into fields of sunflowers nine miles south-west of rebel positions on the city outskirts on Wednesday evening.

After pro-Russian rebels declared their own republics in eastern Ukraine in April, Slavyansk quickly became the focal point of the fighting between government forces and the steadily growing militias. Since the end of May, Kiev's "anti-terrorist operation" – even the name is repulsive to the people of the east – has shelled the city on a near-daily basis, hitting dozens of residential buildings and reducing most of the suburb of Semyonovka to rubble. One local firefighter told me his brigade works five times as much as before because of the shelling. The conflict has now killed at least 423 people, both fighters and civilians, and displaced 46,100, according to recent United Nations figures.
...
Like many families, Denis and Zhenya have harrowing stories of the attacks they have witnessed. The most infamous of them occurred on 8 June, the Russian Orthodox holiday of the Trinity, when the government forces organised a "bloody Sunday" for them, residents tell me. One shell landed in the belltower of a church. Casualty counts varied, but both sides admitted civilians had been killed, including a six-year-old girl.
When the shelling started in the distance, Denis went to look for Zhenya, who wasn't home from her daily errands. As he was walking down Svoboda Street, he heard the whoosh of an incoming shell and dropped to the ground. A few dozen yards away, a shell hit the corner of a high-rise and two more hit the apartment building next door, sending bricks flying.
"There was no fear or surprise, just emotion, 'What are you doing, you dogs? When will it end? Bastards!'" Denis recounts.
http://rt.com/news/173072-child-rescue- ... e-ukraine/
Eyewitness rescue footage showing the cleanup work of the apartment house, managed to capture rescue workers saving the life of a child who miraculously avoided being crushed by tons of debris. Unfortunately other victims of the air strike were not so lucky. So far 11 have died and 8 more are wounded. The regional administration of Donetsk has announced the injured child was receiving treatment in hospital.
