Sadly, the sludge-water is not even at the top of Crystal City’s list of problems.

Nearly all of Crystal City’s top officials, including Lopez, were arrested Feb. 4 on federal bribery charges.

All but one member of the City Council are still under federal investigation for allegedly taking kickbacks from a local gambling ringleader, in exchange for city contracts directed toward his illicit businesses.

Almost every facet of the government in Crystal City had elements of corruption within it,” FBI Special Agent Chris Combs told KSAT after the city officials’ arrests.

They’re definitely not the cheap seats, that’s for sure.

The cost of winning a seat in Congress rose to a new all time high in the 2012 election cycle, according to a new analysis by MapLight.org of data from the Federal Elections Commission.

The average price of winning or holding on to a six-year term in the U.S. Senate averaged $10,476,451 in the 2012 election cycle, MapLight said.

Slightly less pricey, obtaining or being re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives cost an average of $1,689,580.

In effect, that means that the winning Senate candidates needed to raise an average of $14,351 every day between Jan. 1 2010 and election day, 2012 in order to pull of a win, while the victorious House members raised $2.315 per day, MapLight found.

“They’re spending more of their time fundraising than making actual laws,” MapLight President Daniel Newman told the Daily News. “They’ve become high priced telemarketers.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, the price of winning a seat in Congress has risen since the 2008 election cycle. Four years ago, the average amount raised by a winning Senator was $9,211,992, FEC data shows. Winning House members, by comparison, raised $1,471702 during the came cycle.

Newman says that no shortage of the money raised by members of Congress comes from corporations.

“Most industries give money to members of Congress because it buys them access and influence,” Newman said. “And now, with Citizens United, corporations can spend unlimited amounts of money on these races. The result is that members of Congress are fearful about voting against corporate interests because there’s so much money at stake.”

По решению Верховного суда США по делу «Объединенные граждане против Федеральной избирательной комиссии» (Citizens United v. FEC) 2009 года так называемые "Суперкомитеты политического действия" получили возможность свободно тратить практически неограниченные суммы на агитацию за или против необходимого кандидата. При этом предполагается, что эти траты "не координируются" с избирательной кампанией самого кандидата.

Что еще интересно? НКО могут получать неограниченные объемы финансирования, при этом им не обязательно разглашать источник своей финансовой поддержки. Возникает бесконтрольный канал поддержки того или иного кандидата или политической группы, выводя на первый план не политическую борьбу, а финансовую составляющую.

One of the more egregious examples of political corruption comes in the form of America’s astronomically high drug prices. This is no accident; it is a deliberate feature of legislation passed by our own Congress. Federal law prohibits Medicare from negotiating lower prices with drug companies. As a result, Medicare patients pay nearly 60 percent more for drugs than do patients receiving care by the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is not bound by the same anti-negotiation restrictions.

The sequence of events that led to this policy is sickeningly familiar to anyone who follows the way special interest money warps our political system. In the year leading up to Congress’ vote on what eventually became a 1,000-plus page bill, the pharmaceutical industry filled legislators’ bank accounts with campaign contributions. Lobbyists seeking to influence the bill outnumbered members of Congress two to one.

“The pharmaceutical lobbyists wrote the bill,” explained Representative Walter Jones, a Republican from North Carolina, who received the legislative tome less than 24 hours before its scheduled vote.

In order to avoid public scrutiny, the legislation was hustled through at 3 a.m. It ultimately passed, in large part due to the instrumental leadership of then-Congressman Billy Tauzin. Ostensibly as a reward for his hard work ushering the bill through Congress, Tauzin was later named president and CEO of PhRMA, the leading pharmaceutical industry trade group.

And just like that, special interests were able to buy public policy that hamstrings the competitive market and hurts regular Americans.

This happened in 2003, a full seven years before Citizens United, and equally perverse manipulations of the policymaking process continue to this day on nearly every issue — from banking to telecommunications; energy to agriculture.

Помню этого Попова. Когда был скандал с Анной Чапман он делал передачки об ужасном ФБР, гнобящем наши посольства. Там он признавался, что очень любит Америку. Приятно видеть, что он продолжает ездить в ужасную Америку и снимать передачки.
