Sun Ultra 60 hangs booting from CDROM

Post by Siberian Cableman »

Hi everybody,

Could you advise me how to fix the following problem?

When I boot my Sun Ultra 60 from cdrom, it hangs.

Sun Ultra 60 UPA/PCI (2 X UltraSPARC-II 360MHz), Keyboard Present
OpenBoot 3.29, 2048 MB memory installed, Serial #xxxxxxxx.
Ethernet address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx, Host ID: xxxxxxxx.

Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@6,0:f File and args:

I tried to boot from the Disk having Solaris 8 installed on ANOTHER Sun Ultra 60.
It also hangs, but booting from the disk.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Man,

let's see what is going on. If you 100% sure in you CD let's do this:

1) type the following at the ok prompt:
set-defaults
setenv auto-boot? false
setenv diag-level max
setenv diag-switch? true

The turn off the machine using the power switch on the back of the machine -- NOT a "power-off" command or the keyboard power off key sequence.

Wait a few seconds, then turn on the machine using the same switch on the back. It should take a while to come up (it could be up to 10 minutes.) When it comes up to the OK prompt, type the following:

show-post-results

If you get an error, please record the error. If you get a "0", it supposedly tested ok. Then type:

set-defaults
setenv auto-boot? false

see ya soon

Hi Brodiaga,

Thanks for the help. You were absolutely right thinking about hardware:
I ran POST and gave me circled error testing memory:

0> <00> ECC Memory Addr Test
0>INFO: 512MB Bank 0
0>INFO: 512MB Bank 1
0>INFO: 512MB Bank 2
0>INFO: 512MB Bank 3
0> tl tt tstate tpc tnpc
0> 01 68 00000044.80001605 ffffffff.f008678c ffffffff.f0086790
0> DMMU Tag Access 00000000.f00b6000
c Unexpected event occurred - Trap
0> tl tt tstate tpc tnpc
0> 01 68 00000044.80001605 ffffffff.f008678c ffffffff.f0086790
0> DMMU Tag Access 00000000.f00b6000
c Unexpected event occurred - Trap

I removed the whole memory from bank 0 (all 4 chips), and test passed just fine, and box was able to boot from cdrom:

{0} ok show-post-results
Status 0=Pass, Non-Zero=Fail (%o0): 0
Message String (%o1):
Board Descriptor (%o2): ff9fffff0bd11111
{0} ok boot cdrom
Boot device: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3/disk@6,0:f File and args:
Loading ufs-file-system package 1.4 04 Aug 1995 13:02:54.
FCode UFS Reader 1.12 00/07/17 15:48:16.
Redirected to slice: 1
Loading: /platform/SUNW,Ultra-60/ufsboot
Loading: /platform/sun4u/ufsboot

I think I was confused that even part of the memory is "broken" PROM shows it as:

Sun Ultra 60 UPA/PCI (2 X UltraSPARC-II 360MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.29, 2048 MB memory installed, Serial #10115692.
Ethernet address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx, Host ID: xxxxxxxx.

I did not test a lot which memory chip throws error. I just removed the bank 0 from which I started to remove memory. I am not sure if it is ACTUALLY broken or not.

Thanks,
Alex

Рад, что нашел в чём проблема. Жалко что память битая. Требуй у продавца железа заменить её. Будут вопросы пиши.
