These steps are all moves toward the vision of e-business on demand."

"......Virtualization opens the door to many other possibilities. Here are some of the stories:

* Consider the consequences of porting a mundane application like e-mail to Linux™ on a z/VM operating system. Fifteen to twenty million transactions per day are handled by the Securities Industry Automation Corporation (SIAC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the New York (NYSE) and American (AMEX) Stock Exchanges. SIAC's ARTMAIL examines, processes, and issues e-mail activity reports on nearly 100% of the equities and fixed income securities traded in the U.S. each day. In 2½ days, the application was moved from Sun SPARC® servers to an IBM zSeries machine and z/VM operating system running Linux virtual servers. Benefits: SIAC reduced server and maintenance costs for both the organization and its clients, greatly improved scalability and raised availability to a reported 100%. Long term: more Linux applications will include file serving, server consolidation, Web hosting and an internal management system.

* The T-Com unit of Deutsche Telekom AG, which is responsible for the telecommunications giant's Internet platforms, replaced 25 UNIX™ servers with a single zSeries mainframe running two dozen virtual Linux partitions on SuSE Linux. The workload includes e-mail, internal Web sites, network support and e-mail backup for both Deutsche Telekom and its customers. Benefits: Higher security and reliability. Consolidation reduced administration and operating costs. Real estate cut by 40%, using 50% less energy. New ability to integrate applications smoothly at low cost.

* Sonera Entrum, a subsidiary of Finland's largest telecom, consolidated all of its services for broadband digital subscriber line (DSL) customers on one z/Series with z/VM, which houses about 500 virtual servers running Red Hat Linux and SuSE Linux. Benefits: Increased reliability, better customer service, lower TCO. Self-managing server reduces administration and maintenance costs. Long term: will add new, more reliable networking and IP services, plus a wealth of applications for business innovation.

In these and many more cases, consolidation saved money and delivered scalability — z/VM can run thousands of virtual Linux servers simultaneously, and a new partition can be up and running in seconds. Perhaps more important, it also puts in place a platform that invites new workloads. The zSeries, after all, was engineered from the ground up for e-business. Sometimes e-business begins by liberating the data stored in legacy applications.

A. Fig Lee, это шутка была. А вообще, например в нашей кампани мэйнфрэймы занимают на мой взгляд не более 10% площади зала. Один мэйнфрэйм - это шкаф метра два высотой и полтора на полтора в сечении. А вообще этот термин идет с времен когда компьютеры представляли собой фрэймы:

1. 1) каркас, остов, костяк; скелет сооружения и т. п.
2) тех. корпус, станина
3) конструкция, сооружение, строение
2. телосложение; конституция
3. 1) строение, структура, система
2) склад, характер ...
