MANHASSET, N.Y. - Singapore has signed a deal to advise Russia on setting up two special economic zones in Siberia for R&D and manufacturing.
Singapore has experience developing economic zones in China, India, Vietnam and soon in Indonesia. In return for its expertise, Singapore is seeking access to Russian natural gas fields.
Singapore will help set up two of the six Russian economic zones announced earlier. They are a research and development zone in Tomsk and a manufacturing zone in Elabuga, according to reports in the Moscow Times.
Lim Hng Kiang, Singapore's minister for trade and industry, said Russian research in electronics and nanotechnology has "strong scientific potential."
"We view Singapore as a strategic partner and a platform for entering Asian markets," said German Gref, Russia's economic development and trade minister.
A committee consisting of Yury Zhdanov, director of Russia's Federal Special Economic Zone Management Agency and Singapore Trade Minister Lo Vai Keong will manage the agreement.
