A friend of mine became a chiropractor/medical doctor(?)/massage and rehabilitation specialist. She started from zero as she had no previous experience whatsoever -- she was an engineer in Russia. It took her seven years -- included lots of studies, building practice, etc.
She is a lot more then just a chiropractor, as she took many advanced classes, i.e. Pete Egoscue method, massage, etc. Usually she works with soft tissues whenever possible, and only does chiropractic adjustments when truly necessary. Traditional chiropractors often do too many and too strong adjustments, which sometimes results in undesirable side effects (ie excessive spine mobility, inflamation, etc).
It was a lot of hard work for her, but she is very happy now, making good money, and busy with her practice.
She is great -- any time I have any sports injuries I go to her and she fixes anything in one session plus gives me some exercises to do at home. She does great work.

She is in California. Chiropractic treatments here are especially popular.
I personally think chiropractic treatments should be done in combination with deep-tissue sports massage in order to avoid an overuse of chiropractic adjustments. Adjustments should be done only if the deep-tissue work does not fix the problem, because deep-tissue massage is less invasive and has no side effects, unlike the adjustments. Also, adjustments are better done through a very gentle pressure whenever possible, because sharp adjustments may reinjure the area.
So it's great if a chiropractor is trained to apply all of these techniques and can choose which one is the most appropriae for a specific patient. Very few chiropractors can do all of this -- my friend is an exception, so I always go to her.
Good luck!
