My former major professor has a very good RA position in the hot area of bioinformatics:
Graduate Research Assistantship in Mathematics of Viral Evolution at the University of Idaho
I am seeking a bright, ambitious graduate student to participate in an NIH-funded project beginning Fall 2002 or Spring 2003. This is part of a $10.2 million grant awarded to the Universtiy of Idaho’s interdisciplinary Initiative for Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies (IBEST). The student will receive a stipend of $18,000 per calendar year for up to 5 years; additionally, all tuition, fees, and health insurance will be covered by the grant, and there is no teaching requirement. A laptop computer and some travel funds will also be provided.
The student will be expected to pursue a Ph.D. in either Mathematics or in the university’s new degree program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (probably focusing on probability and/or differential equations applied to population genetics and viral evolution) under the direction of Steve Krone.
The University of Idaho is located in the pleasant university town of Moscow and is only 8 miles from Washington State University. Moscow is a friendly and safe community that enjoys many cultural activities and mild weather. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and outdoor activities abound, both nearby and within a few hours drive.
The research will be done in conjunction with an interdisciplinary group of mathematicians, biologists, and computer scientists (the Initiative for Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies) working on problems in viral evolution and microbial ecology. An ability to program in C++ is desirable. For further information, please consult the following web sites:

Steve Krone (http://www.uidaho.edu/~krone)
Initiative for Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies (IBEST) (http://www.cs.uidaho.edu/~foster/ibest)
To apply, send your CV, all graduate and undergraduate transcripts, three letters of reference to the address below. International students must also send results of the TOEFL exam.
