Microbe-processors
Boston Globe, July 1, 2003
Researchers are attempting to turn living cells into computers. These "smart microbes" could one day check cholesterol levels, patrol for cancer, remove contaminants from water, fight genetic diseases, or even construct body parts.
Meanwhile, researchers are using proteins and DNA within cells to create their own basic digital parts, such as a "biochemical inverter," a cell that reacts to the presence of one protein by producing another protein.
