Consumer Linux (Suse 8.2/9, RH 9) supports multiple CPUs?

Post by Siberian Cableman »

Hello everybody,

I have to set Linux box for our BVT/Unit test in the office.
It has to be run on Linux (Suse or RedHat, does not matter)

The box that I got for this is kind of old, double CPUs with P-II 450 Xeon (512 M cache).

I have search on internet, but cannot find that consumer version of Linux ( Suse professional 8.2 or even 9, or RedHat 9) will be installed with both two CPUs supported.

Information that I found is that server versions of Linux, such SLES (Suse) or RHAS (RedHat) support multiple CPUs.

As far as I know, both companies do not develop kernel. So kernel should be the same for Pro and Server version. So even Pro should support multiple CPUs.
Otherwise I have to throw away one CPU :-)

But I do not know everything, so could you confirm these statements :-)

a) Suse Pro 8.2 will support both CPUs on P-II 450 Xeon
b) Suse Pro 9 will support both CPUs on P-II 450 Xeon
c) RedHat 9 will support both CPUs on P-II 450 Xeon

Thanks,
Alex

у SuSe - _deflt .

In such case, what is the difference between consumer and server versions?
What are the limitations of using consumer version against of Server?

I want to know what cost hundreds and thousands dollars for the Server Edition if both "free" consumer and paid Server are build on the same kernel, and Consumer version supports multiple CPUs.

Thanks,
Alex

Commercial-grade QA and support, applications compatibility testing and certification, system update services and professional education e.g. everything that makes difference between Windows and El Cheapo 8)

Ну ядра там тоже слегка разные, c разным набором патчей, в дистрибутивах разный набор сервисов + поддержка.
Возможно есть отдельные сервисы от третьих фирм.

В любом случае, ядро всегда можно взять из "Server Edition"
бесплатно, только откомпилировать придётся.
