Oracle and Microsoft to cozy up

Long-time rivals Oracle and Microsoft may be about to set aside some of their differences. Oracle president Charles Phillips told me in an interview yesterday that the companies are in talks about ways to collaborate and plan to make "some noise" to that effect shortly. What's behind the move? Oracle wants to sell its databases and applications to Windows users, and Microsoft wants to stanch the progress of Linux. Says Phillips, "They would rather see us doing well on Windows than us doing well on Linux." Any initiative would go beyond just marketing. "There's some additional things we can do if we work together to further optimize [our products], and we're doing those things," says Phillips
