AFTER 40 years of trying, Turkey was told yesterday it had passed the first hurdle in its campaign to join the EU after the European Commission recommended that entry talks begin.
Turkey is not expected to join the EU for at least a decade, but the country’s poverty and size, with a largely Muslim population of 70 million, has stirred up controversy among EU nations.
Meanwhile, Romania and Bulgaria were told yesterday they are on course for membership in 2007.
