System/Network administrator/designer

Job Description:
Defines, designs, implements and supports network and server solutions.
Proposes and implements system enhancements (software and hardware updates)
that will improve the performance and reliability of the WINDOWS/ Unix and
networking environment. Makes recommendations for purchase or upgrade of
systems and data networks. Coordinates network system planning, installing,
monitoring, testing, and servicing. 2nd/3rd level support to user community
(Some 1st level support may be required during first few months). Willing to
train junior employees on system procedures and proper utilization.
Work on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an
in-depth evaluation of various factors. Exercises judgment within broadly
defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and
evaluation criterion for obtaining results. Resolves problems and may
provide work leadership.
Requirements:
6+ years experience in systems administration (Windows XP, W2K, NT, W98
client and server). Good working experience on Unix/ Linux systems as well
as Checkpoint and Cisco networking gear.
software or hardware systems - to include publication, IT certifications,
participation in industry forums and/or advanced degrees.
Preferred Certifications include: CCNA, CCNP, Win2K/XP MCSE and PMI.
Experience deploying an IT Production application environment is strongly
desired. Excellent skills in planning, conceptual consulting, and verbal /
written communication with the ability to articulate strong product
knowledge to clients and staff. Must be skilled in technical writing,
proposal development and design highly creative and innovative approaches to
problems.
Education:
College or University degree in computer science or related field or
equivalent experience
Knowledge/Skills In-depth knowledge of WINDOWS/Unix/Networking systems
administration and the definition, design, and implementation of network
communications and solutions
Keys:
Strong Windows and good UNIX/Linux server support experience + good
networking
20 servers in Toronto (75% W2000, 3 HP/UX rest Linux - will be pushing for
more Linux and less Windows in future).
Knowledge of systems, OS, patches, setup and installs, HW (IBM mostly),
network switching and routing, T1 and DSL lines, plus Checkpoint VPN
technology and firewalls
This role will grow from supporting mostly Toronto to supporting North
America including centre in Hollywood.
Good experience setting standards for servers, network and workstations (Win
2000)
Will carry phone/pager for 'on call' work every 3-4 weeks
Nice to have:
Experience with Ms SQL, Notes, Oracle, Informix, production automation and
system mgnt tools, image and ghost tools, HP/UX admin skills, Apache.
