Russia is planning to at least double troop numbers at its air base in Kyrgyzstan, the head of the Russian air force said Wednesday.

Mikhailov spoke on the same day as Russia's upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, ratified an agreement with Kyrgyzstan on the base.

Earlier this week, Kyrgyzstan's newly-elected President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who has turned his foreign policy increasingly towards Moscow in recent weeks, said Kyrgyzstan wanted to discuss the closure of the US base but did not give details about a timeline for the pull-out.
