Айсберг, you did a good job!

"Iraq's debt to the Russia Federation comes to $8 billion and as far as the Russian government's position on this, it is not planning any kind of a write-off of that debt," Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov told reporters. "Iraq is not a poor country," he said.

'OPEC Has Already Turned to the Euro'

"It has been suggested that OPEC may begin pricing crude oil in terms of the euro, and further, that OPEC may actually begin invoicing its crude oil exports in terms of euros. This latter step would require shifting out of dollars, with OPEC receiving euros in payment.

These possibilities have been scoffed at by many whose interests are tied to the fate of the dollar, but it seems that OPEC has already taken the first step - it appears to be pricing crude oil in terms of the euro. This conclusion is apparent from the following table. The import data is from the Department of Commerce report entitled U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services. The source for the euro exchange rate is the Federal Reserve, and I have calculated the euro's average exchange rate to the dollar for each year based on daily data.

US Imports of Crude oil
(1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6)
Year Quantity (thousands of barrels) Value (thousands of US dollars) Unit price (US dollars) Average daily US$ per Ђ exchange rate Unit price (euros)
2001 3,471,066 74,292,894 $ 21.40 0.8952 Ђ 23.91
2002 3,418,021 77,283,329 $ 22.61 0.9454 Ђ 23.92
2003 3,673,596 99,094,675 $ 26.97 1.1321 Ђ 23.82

We can see from column (4) in the above table that in 2001, each barrel of imported crude oil cost $21.40 on average for that year. But by 2003 the average price of a barrel of crude oil had risen 26.0% to $26.97 per barrel. However, the important point is shown in column (6). Note that the price of crude oil in terms of euros is essentially unchanged throughout this 3-year period.
As the dollar has fallen, the dollar price of crude oil has risen. But the euro price of crude oil remains essentially unchanged throughout this 3-year period. It does not seem logical that this result is pure coincidence."

.."The above table is also interesting for another reason. Column (3) shows that the import cost of crude oil has risen by approximately $25 billion from 2001 to 2003. This increase has directly added to the trade deficit. Therefore, the dollar has entered a vicious circle. As the dollar declines, the oil exporters raise the cost of their oil to protect them from a loss of purchasing power, and this rise in the price of crude oil further worsens the trade deficit, which causes the dollar to weaken further and the oil exporters to raise prices yet again."

"OPEC is considering a move away from using the U.S. dollar — and to the euro — to set its price targets for crude oil, the highest-profile manifestation of the debilitating effect of depreciation on the greenback's standing as the currency of international commerce.

Several members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries are seeking formal talks on using the euro, as well as the U.S. dollar, when determining price targets for crude, a senior oil minister within the cartel said Monday. “There are countries that are proposing this,” Venezuela's Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said in Caracas. “It's out there, under discussion.”

Mr. Ramirez did not specify which OPEC members are pushing the proposal, but much of the impetus is believed to come from Persian Gulf producers.

They have seen their purchasing power in Europe pinched as the U.S. dollar loses ground against the euro — including touching a record low Monday."

Wishful thinking :D

PARIS, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Airbus planes are about to get a little more American.

Threatened by the U.S. dollar's steep two-year fall, the European jet maker is taking aggressive steps to shift its currency risk to firms that supply components for its planes.
The measures, described in interviews with some of the Toulouse, France-based manufacturer's top suppliers, are likely to give U.S. suppliers a more substantial share of Airbus business, notably on high profile new programmes like its A400M military transport plane.

Meanwhile, Airbus's traditional European suppliers are under pressure to accept contracts in dollars -- a development which is forcing them to buy more of their own parts in the United States and other dollar-zone countries.

These trends are likely to gather momentum in the years ahead as Airbus looks to achieve more balance between its revenues, which are almost exclusively in dollars, and its costs, roughly half of which are in euros......
...............................................................................................................................................................
Though Airbus was launched three decades ago to challenge U.S. dominance in commercial aircraft, it has always relied on American suppliers. Firms like General Electric , United Technologies , Honeywell and Rockwell Collins do hundreds of millions of euros in business with Airbus each year.
